About Château

Château Montrose occupies a near-monopole gravel plateau sloping toward the Gironde estuary, a terroir that yields some of the Médoc's most powerful and long-lived wines, often likened to Latour for their structure. The estate was created in the early 19th century, around 1815, by the Dumoulin family from land once part of the great Calon-Ségur property, and was classified a Second Growth in 1855. It remained in the Charmolüe family for over a century before the construction and telecommunications magnates Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired it in 2006, financing extensive modernization and sustainability investments. The wine is dense, tannic and reserved in youth, demanding patience but rewarding decades in the cellar. The Grand Vin accounts for roughly 40% of the harvest, averaging around 15,000 cases, with the balance going to the second wine, La Dame de Montrose.

Editorial notes

Practical guidance

One of the Médoc's most powerful, structured Second Growths; built for very long aging, so cellar the Grand Vin and turn to La Dame de Montrose for nearer-term drinking.
