Saint-Estèphe AOC
The Médoc's northernmost commune, Saint-Estèphe makes sturdy, structured reds whose clay-rich soils give them notable depth and longevity.
About Saint-Estèphe
Saint-Estèphe occupies the northern end of the Haut-Médoc, where the gravel banks of the southern communes give way to a higher proportion of clay and limestone. That cooler, water-retentive terroir yields wines that are traditionally the most robust and tannic of the Médoc — deeply coloured, firmly structured and built to age. Merlot plays a slightly larger supporting role here than further south, softening a Cabernet Sauvignon backbone marked by black fruit, earth and savoury spice. Although the commune was awarded only five classed growths in 1855, estates such as Cos d'Estournel and Montrose rank among the finest in all Bordeaux, and a strong tier of cru bourgeois rounds out its reputation for value. Modern viticulture has tamed some of Saint-Estèphe's old austerity, but the wines retain their characteristic power, grip and capacity for long cellaring.

Editorial notes
Five 1855 classified growths; clay-rich soils give the wines a sturdier, more tannic profile than southern Médoc communes.
