About Gaja

Gaja was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in Barbaresco, Piedmont, the family having arrived from Spain in the 17th century. The estate became one of Italy's most influential producers under Angelo Gaja, great-grandson of the founder, who joined in 1961 and is widely credited with modernising Italian winemaking and raising Nebbiolo's global prestige to rival the first growths of Bordeaux. Gaja pioneered single-vineyard bottlings such as Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn and Costa Russi, and expanded beyond Barbaresco into Barolo, plus estates in Brunello di Montalcino (Tuscany) and Bolgheri. The firm remains family-owned: now past 70, Angelo Gaja has passed routine management to his children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni. Total annual production across all its wines is around 350,000 bottles. Gaja is regarded as one of the foundational names of modern Italian fine wine.

Editorial notes

Practical guidance

Holdings span Barbaresco and Barolo zones in Piedmont plus estates in Montalcino and Bolgheri in Tuscany. The 350,000-bottle figure is total across all wines, not Barbaresco alone.
