Marqués de Murrieta
Rioja's pioneering estate, the first to export its wines, home of the legendary Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva.
About Marqués
Marqués de Murrieta was founded in 1852 by Peruvian-born Luciano de Murrieta y García-Lemoine, 1st Marquess of Murrieta, who, after studying winemaking in Bordeaux, produced the first wine of Rioja's modern era and became the first to export Rioja abroad. In 1872 he acquired the Castillo Ygay estate near Logroño, where the wines are still made today from estate-grown Tempranillo and other Rioja varieties. The house is most famous for its Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, among the longest-aged and most collectible wines in Spain, alongside the modern flagship Dalmau and the white Capellanía. In 1983 the firm was purchased by Vicente Cebrián-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell, and since his death it has been run by his son, Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, who has invested heavily in restoring the historic Ygay estate. Marqués de Murrieta remains a touchstone of classical, age-worthy Rioja.
