About Mastroberardino
Mastroberardino, based in Atripalda in the province of Avellino, is the historic heart of fine wine in Campania. The family has farmed grapes for some ten generations since the mid-18th century, and the present-day winery was founded in 1878 by Angelo Mastroberardino. Its defining figure, Antonio Mastroberardino, rebuilt the estate after the Second World War and earned the nickname 'the grape archaeologist' for championing native Campanian varieties, Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Piedirosso and others, when many had been all but abandoned. For much of the 20th century the estate accounted for the great majority of Taurasi DOCG production, and its Radici Taurasi is widely credited with launching the modern red-wine revival of southern Italy. Today the family-owned winery, led by Piero Mastroberardino, the tenth generation, produces around 150,000 cases a year and remains a benchmark for age-worthy Aglianico and serious Campanian whites.
