About Niepoort

Niepoort has operated independently in the Port trade since 1842, when Franciscus Marius Niepoort, born in Hilversum in Holland, settled in Portugal and founded the house. For its first century and a half the firm worked chiefly as a négociant, sourcing and ageing wines in its lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia, building a quiet reputation for superb colheita and aged tawny Ports. The estate was transformed by Dirk van der Niepoort, the fifth generation, who joined in the late 1980s and acquired Quinta de Nápoles in 1987 to grow his own grapes. Convinced the Douro could make world-class dry wines, Dirk became a leading figure in the region's table-wine renaissance and a founding member of the Douro Boys. Niepoort remains one of the few small, family-owned Port houses; Dirk's son Daniel, the sixth generation, has now joined the company, ensuring its independent future.
