About Touriga

Touriga Nacional is widely considered Portugal’s greatest red grape variety — the most aromatic and editorially significant grape in both Port wine and the modern unfortified Douro DOC category. The grape is native to the Douro Valley and adjacent regions; it’s genuinely indigenous (not a global variety adapted to Portugal). Touriga Nacional’s defining characteristics include extreme aromatic intensity (violet and bergamot are signature notes), very high tannin and acid, and deep color — paired with low yield potential that has historically limited plantings. Modern Portuguese viticulture has expanded Touriga Nacional plantings as the unfortified Douro DOC category has grown. In Port wine blends the grape provides the aromatic peak and structural backbone; in serious unfortified Douro DOC wines (Quinta do Vale Meão, Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte) Touriga Nacional can produce 100% single-varietal expressions that age 20+ years from strong vintages. The grape is also significant in the Dão region of Portugal’s interior.

Structural notes
Thick-skinned; very low yield; intense aroma and color; demanding viticulturally but produces concentrated wines.

Traditional Port production uses foot-treading in lagares to extract color and tannin. Modern unfortified Douro production uses standard fermentation.

Editorial notes

Practical guidance

Touriga Nacional yields are extremely low — historically a limiting factor in plantings. Modern viticulture has expanded the variety as unfortified Douro DOC wines have grown in international demand.
