About Quinta

Quinta do Noval is one of the Douro's most storied single-quinta Port estates, its name first recorded in land registries in 1715. After phylloxera devastation, the property was acquired and restored in 1894 by the Porto shipper António José da Silva, whose son-in-law Luiz Vasconcelos Porto rebuilt the terraced vineyards. The house made its name with the celebrated 1931 Vintage Port and the legendary Nacional, produced from a small parcel of ungrafted vines that yields one of the rarest and most coveted wines in the world. Since 1993 Quinta do Noval has been part of AXA Millésimes, the wine division of the French insurance group, which invested heavily in modernising the estate while preserving its identity. Unusually among the great houses, Noval centralised production in the Douro Valley itself. Its Vintage Ports and aged tawnies remain reference points for the category.

Editorial notes

Practical guidance

The ungrafted Nacional is extremely rare and expensive; standard Vintage and aged tawnies are more accessible. Classic with blue cheese such as Stilton.
