Falset
The small hilltop capital of Priorat, gateway to Catalonia's most prestigious red-wine region and its dramatic slate terraces.
About Falset
Falset is the capital of the Priorat, a rugged, sparsely populated corner of inland Catalonia that produces some of Spain's most sought-after red wines. A small medieval town watched over by a ruined castle, it anchors a region defined by steep terraces of llicorella—slate and quartz soils—on which old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena yield concentrated, mineral reds. Priorat is one of only two appellations in Spain to hold the highest DOQ/DOCa rank, and Falset is the practical base for exploring its scattered villages and the adjacent DO Montsant. The town's modernista cooperative cellar, designed in the tradition of Cèsar Martinell, and its spring Fira del Vi wine fair underscore its role as the comarca's wine hub. It is a quiet, authentic gateway for serious wine travellers.

Wine tourism notes
Falset is the administrative capital of the Priorat, one of only two Spanish regions with the top DOCa/DOQ classification. It is the natural base for touring Priorat's steep, slate-and-quartz llicorella terraces, where old-vine Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan) produce dense, mineral reds. The town also sits at the doorstep of the neighbouring DO Montsant, and its spring Fira del Vi is the region's key trade and tasting event.
Regional cuisine
Robust inland Catalan cooking suited to Priorat's powerful reds: grilled meats, game, escudella-style stews, local olive oil, almonds and hazelnuts, plus llesques and coques from the surrounding hills. Falset's tapas bars and the annual Fira del Vi showcase the comarca's wines alongside regional produce.

Use Falset as a base for Priorat and neighbouring Montsant; roads are winding, so allow extra driving time between the terraced villages.
