About Vilafranca del Penedès

Vilafranca del Penedès is the capital of the Penedès, Catalonia's most important wine region and the home of Cava, Spain's traditional-method sparkling wine. Founded in the mid-twelfth century after the decline of nearby Olèrdola, the town grew into a market and wine-trading centre and today anchors a landscape of vineyards feeding the great Cava houses, most famously clustered in neighbouring Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. Its Vinseum museum documents the long history of Catalan winemaking, while the surrounding comarca produces sparkling wines from local grapes such as Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada alongside still whites and reds. Vilafranca is also celebrated for its castellers—the human towers that crown its late-summer Festa Major. For visitors, it is the obvious hub for Cava cellar tours within easy reach of Barcelona.

Wine tourism notes

Vilafranca del Penedès is the capital of the Penedès wine region and a central base for Cava country. The town and surrounding comarca are dominated by traditional-method sparkling wine production, with the great Cava houses concentrated in and around neighbouring Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. Vilafranca's Vinseum museum traces Catalan wine culture, and the area's still whites and reds complement its sparkling identity.

Regional cuisine

Catalan Penedès cooking pairs naturally with sparkling wine: escalivada, botifarra sausage, coca flatbreads, calçots in season and seafood from the nearby coast, alongside the region's traditional castellers (human towers) culture during the Festa Major.
