About Heitz

Heitz Cellar, established in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz, is one of Napa Valley's foundational fine-wine estates. The winery made history with the 1966 Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, among the first single-vineyard-designated wines in the United States, sourced under a long-standing agreement from the May family's vineyard in Oakville. That bottling, with its distinctive minty, structured profile, became a touchstone for the idea of Napa terroir and remains the estate's flagship. The Heitz family guided the winery for decades, with son David Heitz taking over winemaking in the late 1970s. In April 2018 the estate was acquired by the Lawrence family (Lawrence Wine Estates), opening a new chapter while preserving its classic, age-worthy style. Producing around 40,000 cases annually, Heitz Cellar continues to bottle benchmark Napa Cabernet built for the cellar.

Editorial notes

Practical guidance

The Martha's Vineyard Cabernet is a long-ageing, collectible wine; give top vintages a decade or more and decant before serving.
