About Côte-Rôtie

Côte-Rôtie (“Roasted Slope”) is the northernmost serious appellation of the Northern Rhône and arguably the most aromatic Syrah-based wine in the world. The vineyards are planted on south-facing schist terraces so steep they require hand-cultivation throughout the growing season; mechanization is impossible. The appellation’s distinctive style includes the legal allowance for co-fermentation with up to 20% Viognier (a white grape) — a practice that adds aromatic lift, color stability, and softness to the wine. The Côte Brune sub-area is darker-soiled and produces more structured wines; Côte Blonde is lighter and more aromatic. The most famous producer is E. Guigal, whose three single-vineyard “La La’s” (La Mouline, La Landonne, La Turque) define the appellation’s aspirational ceiling. Other significant producers include René Rostaing, Domaine Jamet, Yves Cuilleron, and Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin.

Editorial notes

Practical guidance

Côte-Rôtie wines age 15-25+ years from strong vintages. Single-vineyard bottlings (the La La’s, plus newer single-vineyard releases from other producers) are the appellation’s editorial center.
