Tain-l'Hermitage
A Rhône-side town beneath the terraced granite hill of Hermitage, home base of the northern Rhône's great Syrah houses.
About Tain-l'Hermitage
Tain-l'Hermitage is a small town on the left bank of the Rhône, defined by the steep granite hill that rises behind it — the fabled Hermitage cru, its terraces of Syrah among the most storied vineyards in France. A crenellated chapel crowns the summit above rows of old vines. The town has long been a négociant centre: houses such as M. Chapoutier and Paul Jaboulet Aîné are based here, and the celebrated domaine of Jean-Louis Chave farms these slopes. Whites of Marsanne and Roussanne share the hill with the reds, while just across the footbridge lies Tournon-sur-Rhône, and Côte-Rôtie's steep terraces sit a short drive north. Tain is also home to the Valrhona chocolate works, whose Cité du Chocolat draws visitors — a fitting neighbour for a town of powerful, dark-fruited wines. It makes an ideal base for touring the northern Rhône.
